Tooth FillingsDr. Knight offers several options for repair and restoration of teeth. She will suggest whatever is best for your particular situation, considering your preferences and whether or not there are any risk factors which will affect the restoration’s long-term success.
Tooth-colored restorations include composite resins, glass ionomers, and porcelain inlays and onlays. Under certain circumstances, dental amalgam may be used on the back teeth only, especially if high strength is needed or fluid isolation is difficult.
Silver fillings or amalgams are very strong and can give many years of good service without significant problems. They are inexpensive to place and they are not technique-sensitive like composites. The main disadvantage of silver fillings is that they are unattractive if visible in your smile. For that reason alone we mainly provide tooth-colored restorations which are durable and beautiful.
There are many advantages to tooth-colored indirect restorations. Custom made porcelain onlays are bonded to the teeth creating a tight, superior fit to the natural tooth. Such conservative restorations are used in instances where much of the tooth structure has been lost. The tooth remains intact and stronger, as a result of the onlay.
Tooth-colored direct restorations are composite resins that are carefully designed and sculpted chairside by Dr. Knight to repair damaged and decayed teeth. These are bonded and cured in place in same day appointments. Glass ionomers are special fillings used mainly on roots to treat root decay in older or special needs patients.
Porcelain onlays & Tooth Colored Restorations are used to repair teeth with results that are not only beautiful and natural but also add strength to weakened teeth. These restorations are esthetically pleasing and very strong thanks to new bonding techniques.
The result is a beautiful smile!
Replacing Silver Fillings with Tooth-Colored Restorations:
Dr. Knight is a conservative dentist and only recommends replacement fillings when your old ones have failed. However, you may have your silver fillings replaced with tooth-colored restorations if you wish. This elective process requires one or more appointments depending on whether there are composite resins or custom lab-made onlays in your treatment plan.
When completed your teeth are restored to a natural and more beautiful appearance!
